Drifters (1929) (50 mins)
, Start Time: 20:30 Screen Machine Bank Street, Cromarty IV11
Tickets: £7 adults / £3 under 16
Guests: Drew Wright & Hamish Brown
This is a festival highlight and a chance to harken back to the early days of silent cinema. We have not screened a documentary by the legendary film maker John Grierson at the festival before, but we are making up for lost time with a very special showing of his seminal work Drifters. Grierson founded and led the British documentary film movement for forty years, but this was his first film and the only one he personally directed. The film is a study of the lives of the North Sea herring fishermen in the 1920s. Man versus nature and tradition versus modernity are key themes in this beautiful, poetic work. For our screening, musicians Drew Wright and Hamish Brown will perform the music they have composed especially for the film.
