Double Indemnity represents the high-water mark of 1940s film noir. A gullible insurance
man is seduced and trapped by a calculating woman amidst the dark shadows and expressionist lighting of mid-century LA. The brooding look of the film is magnificent,
haunted by malice. Directed by the wonderful Billy Wilder, with superb performances from Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G Robinson performing from a Raymond Chandler script. This is one of poet Jackie Kay’s favourite films. She will be with us to tell you why.
